For the Broadband & Broadcast department in Erlangen, the Fraunhofer Institute for Integrated Circuits IIS is currently seeking
Bachelor Thesis Students or Interns for the Topic: 5G RAN high layer split for New Radio SDR-based testbed
The topic is also suitable for student projects, e.g. »Forschungspraktikum«, »Industrial Design Project« or similar. The thesis/internship/project can be processed within a student team.
The Broadband & Broadcast (BB) department is active in the areas of mobile communications, satellite communications, Internet-of-Things and automotive communication systems. We take new concepts and algorithms from theory, implement them and test them in simulations and in prototypes in our labs and in the field. For instance, we operated a LTE-Advanced network with commercial equipment, which we use to check the interoperability of our prototypes with the LTE standard. Currently, we are developing a 5G New Radio Testbed with base-station (gNB) and user equipment (UE) for advanced research topics. In short, the BB department establishes a bridge between communication theory and its employment in practice.
As our group is striving to implement 5G NR high performance testbeds, design efforts are focusing on the compliancy with the latest radio access network (RAN) interface standards in order to achieve smooth integration with third-party hardware and software units (e.g. multi radio access technology or multi-vendor applications). To this purpose, we are currently looking for a student to support the definition, design and development of application programming interfaces (APIs) compliant to higher layer 5G RAN functional split between central and distributed units (e.g. as defined in 3GPP TR 38.801). The work will be the baseline for implementing advanced low latency 5G testbeds built around software defined radio (SDR) platforms running open source implementation of 3GPP standards.
Your responsibilities: You …
- investigate the available standards for 5G NR RAN functional splits
- design and develop 5G RAN APIs
- support the integration into the 5G NR testbed
Your profile: You …
- are studying computer science or similar
- have experience in programming languages (e.g. C/C++, Python)
- have knowledge in cellular communication systems 4G/5G
What you can expect from us
- An open and cooperative working environment
- Collaboration in interesting and innovative projects
- Many opportunities to gain practical experience
The thesis will be assigned and carried out in accordance with the rules of your university. For this reason, please discuss the thesis with a professor who can advise you over the course of the project.
The duration for the thesis should be 3 to 6 months and it can be started from 09/2019 on.
