Bachelor / Master Thesis Students or Interns for the Topic: Investigation of the Power Consumption of NB-IoT-Systems in 5G Networks
5G is a key technology that will significantly change the world of technology and industry over the next years. This technology does not only focus on higher data rates, but on connecting machines and sensors in the context of the Internet of Things in particular. The Fraunhofer IIS performs research, development and tests for such solutions and technologies for future 5G networks. In this regard, the Self-Powered Radio Systems Department in Nürnberg mainly concentrates on the 5G technology NB-IoT (Narrowband Internet of Things). This new radio standard aims at applications in which small data volumes have to be transmitted with particularly high power-efficiency, for example in Industry 4.0.
In this regard, an interesting task is to investigate the amount of power required for a single sensor node in order to communicate over NB-IoT in detail. More specifically, the aim is to assess the influence of different application and transmission scenarios on the power consumption of the NB-IoT module. In addition, we will investigate how the communication over NB-IoT can be optimized in terms of power consumption.

- build a 5G NB-IoT test-setup and put it into operation
- perform various investigations of power consumption, configuration and network performance
