Bachelor Thesis Students or Interns for the Topic: Field tests and measurements of 4G/5G cellular networks
The Broadband & Broadcast (BB) department is active in the areas of mobile communications, satellite communications, Internet-of-Things and automotive communication systems. We take new concepts and algorithms from theory, implement them and test them in simulations and in prototypes in our labs and in the field. For instance, we operated a LTE-Advanced network with commercial equipment, which we use to check the interoperability of our prototypes with the LTE standard. Currently we are planning a 5G New Radio Testbed for advanced research. In short, the BB department establishes a bridge between communication theory and its employment in practice.
Research and development for technologies for fully autonomous driving is increasingly high in these days. Driverless cars bring new challenges not only to the car manufactures but also to mobile connectivity providers. Imagine for example what happens if an autonomous car gets into a situation where it cannot make any further decisions on its own? A human driver, who may not be a passenger of the car, must remotely assist. Therefore a good and reliable cellular network coverage is needed and the data connection needs to fulfill all requirements to ensure a safe remote control of the car. Several video streams from on-board cameras may need to be streamed from the car to the control center while control commands need to be transferred with low latency to the car. The question is: Is the cars cellular network performance suitable for remote control? What challenges need to be solved with 5G to fulfill these purposes? The goal of this work is to collect data about today’s 4G cellular networks availability, reliability and speed on a set of selected routes. The work can be done in English or German.

The duration for the thesis should be 3-4 months and it can be started from now on.
